We continued our discussion on the Plato excerpt and got closer to figuring out the allegory. We will continue the discussion tomorrow. If you were absent, please record a classmate’s discussion notes and read & write reactions to the discussion in a different color pen.
Important Dates 9/19: A visit from Mr. Wilder - come with Diploma related questions for him Periods 2 & 6
Today we discussed the journals, finished reading/marking the Plato excerpt and tried to figure out the allegory. We will continue the discussion Thursday. If you were absent, please finish the reading, start a new journal entry and record a classmate’s discussion notes (source who you got the notes from). Reflect on the copied discussion notes in writing in your journal. Periods 3 & 7 Today we discussed the journals, finished reading/marking the Plato excerpt and tried to figure out the allegory. We will continue the discussion Thursday. If you were absent, please finish the reading, start a new journal entry and record a classmate’s discussion notes (source who you got the notes from). Reflect on the copied discussion notes in writing in your journal. We talked about what would make a successful learner according to Lao-Tzu. At the end of class students were asked to spend 20 minutes tonight reading this excerpt from Plato’s Republic. Remember you do not need to finish it, as you will get time next class to do so. Also, remember, please AVOID doing the ‘efficient-student’ behaviors of looking up what the text means. I want you to practice what it means to learn from the text – not what it takes to have someone tell you what the text says. Thanks for just reading, reflecting, and writing down any questions that you have.
If you were absent, get the journal notes from a fellow classmate and spend time reacting to the points brought up in the discussion. Additionally, after reacting to the discussion notes, please reflect on if you think Lao-Tzu would agree with the IB Learner Profile. Justify your answer. Important Dates 9/10: Read the excerpt handed out in class for 20 minutes (don’t finish as you will get time the next day we meet), with thinking, commentary, questions and insights written down, either on the reading or on a separate sheet of paper We finished up Journal #1 and started on Journal #2. Then, we looked at a text and used various ‘ways of knowing’ to figure out what it was, it a certain extent. We then spent the last half of class reading and taking notes on a few chapters of the Tao-Te Ching. If you were absent, get the journal notes from a fellow classmate and read, then write your questions, connects and reactions on the following chapters.
Important Dates 9/9: Have the Tao-Te Ching read, with thinking, commentary, questions and insights written down (either on the reading or on a separate sheet of paper) Today we checked out textbooks and discussed what it means to know something.
For further enjoyment… take a look at this opinion piece about knowledge and teaching: https://www.nytimes.com/2018/08/25/opinion/sunday/college-professors-experts-advice.html If you were absent… The prompt for the discussion was “what does it mean to know?”. For make-up work –write out your own answer to the prompt and then get a class mate’s (cite them) discussion notes - put those all together for Journal Entry #1- 9/5 with the heading “To Know?” Also, make a note that you were absent that day right after the heading. Important Dates 9/6: turn in signed syllabus and sign up for turnitin.com (see lower right part of this pages for class codes) – AND – ask the reflection question to a non TOK person, briefly recording the answer in Journal #1… Reminder – each class has a slightly different question, so if you are unsure of the question ask someone who has the same period as you Today we did a little intro, filled out a note card, and talked about what we learned about ourselves this summer!
